Online therapy

Technological developments in recent decades have made it possible to have therapy from anywhere including the comfort of your own home. It’s convenient and all you need is a good internet connection and a private space.

Why Online?

Why Online?

More and more people are finding that due to personal circumstances, whether travelling for work, living in remote locations or on the road, mobility and health issues, disability it’s impossible to attend a therapist’s office on a weekly basis. For others the idea of meeting face-to-face brings up anxiety making online therapy a more manageable way to have therapy.

Online therapy gives you the opportunity to get the help you need to overcome and free yourself of the emotional challenges which may be holding you back in your life.

Confidentiality & data security

Confidentiality & data security

Confidentiality is central in the therapeutic relationship whether it’s face-to-face or online, and we ensure that our work with you is confidential and secure by using platforms which use encrypted point-to-point connections, and which are HIPAA-compliant and secure for telemedicine needs such as Online therapy.

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) is United States legislation that provides data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information.

Email

Image

Therapy through Email involves the exchange of emails, through which we have a dialogue together exploring your concerns.

It can work well for people who find they express themselves better through writing. Another benefit is that Email sessions are not dependent on being available at a particular time, allowing more flexibility for people with changeable schedules.

How it Works
We will set a weekly ‘session time’ which will last for 50 minutes similar to a face-to-face session. You are free to send your therapist your therapeutic email anytime during the week up until the start of your session time. Your therapist will then read, write and send their response to you at the end of the 50-minute session. Your therapeutic email should be up to a maximum of 1000 words to allow your therapist enough time to complete their response. If your therapist is unable to address everything in your email, they will respond to the most pressing issues that you shared.

Security

It is up to you how we will work through email with regards to ensure security and we can offer two options.

Hushmail
We can use Hushmail to exchange our emails which is a HIPPA compliant email service with the highest security. You do not need to have an account yourself with Hushmail.

Encrypted Attachment
The other option is to write your therapeutic email in a Microsoft Word document and encrypt it with a password. You can then attach this document to your email. You will need to send your therapist your password in a separate email before therapy starts so that they can open your document.

Please be aware that your therapist will read and respond to your therapy email only during your session time. In the event that you need urgent support we recommend you contact your doctor, visit A&E or the Samaritans on 116 123 or on jo@samaritans.org.

Instant messaging

Therapy through instant-messaging enables us to explore your concerns in a real-time conversation through the exchange of text-based messages in a chat-room environment.

How it works
We will set a regular weekly time for our sessions during which we will meet online to discuss and explore your concerns. A session lasts for 50 minutes, and it is important that you are in a private space during the session so that you feel safe and secure to explore your concerns in a confidential space.

We use Doxy.me for the sessions which is a HIPPA-compliant platform ensuring our sessions are encrypted and private. Your therapist will send you a one-time link that you will use every week to access a ‘virtual waiting room’. Your therapist will meet you there for your session. There is no need for you to download any additional software.

Video conferencing

With Video-conferencing we have sessions through a live video link similar to Skype or Facetime, but through a more secure platform.

How it works
As the sessions are in real-time we will set a regular weekly time for our sessions, where we will meet online to discuss and explore your concerns using a webcam seeing and hearing each other very much like a face-to-face session. Each session lasts for 50 minutes, and it is important that you are in a private space during the session so that you feel safe and secure to explore your concerns in a confidential space. We recommend that you also use headphones with a built-in microphone which ensures no one can overhear our conversation. It can also make it easier to hear each other if there are any issues with connection or signal.
